Kroger will Market Cannabidiol Products in its Stores: Kroger, the largest food retailer in the United States, will sell cannabidiol-based products in nearly 1,000 stores. However, none of the items are food. The company will market topical CBD products derived from hemp, including creams, balms, and oils, in 945 stores in 17 states, a company spokeswoman said in a statement. The supermarket chain joins a growing list of retailers across the country, including Walgreens, CVS, Vitamin Shoppe, and GNC, which are sourcing products made from cannabis.
“Like many retailers, we are beginning to offer our customers a highly cured selection of topical products such as lotions, balms, oils, and creams that are infused with hemp-derived CBD,” said a Kroger spokeswoman.
Consumers are increasingly curious about CBD, a non-intoxicating cannabis compound that promises to help alleviate problems such as anxiety and pain, although almost no scientific evidence supports these claims. Although hemp-derived CBD is now legal in the United States, thanks to the agricultural law passed by the local Congress at the end of last year, the FDA says companies still cannot add CBD to food or sell it as a dietary supplement.
The sale of CBD-infused beauty and skin products carries far less legal risk, which explains why retailers, like Kroger, are starting to stock these types of products first. The FDA is considering how companies could add CBD to foods and dietary supplements, but a recent hearing on the subject showed how much regulators still want to learn – and see more scientific evidence of the substance’s effects – before making any decisions.

For Kroger, the sale of products with CBD will mark only one of the many changes it has made in recent years, as it sought to reposition its business to keep Amazon and Walmart away. As part of its three-year investment plan, the retail chain has invested money in sales and digital delivery services to keep up with consumer buying habits. These investments, however, have already consumed their gains.
It has also strengthened its ties with the Walgreens pharmacy chain, as both chains are looking for partners to defend themselves against stronger threats. The two said last year that Walgreens will market 2,300 Kroger products on the shelves of 13 of its stores.
According to the company’s spokesperson, Kroger will sell cannabidiol products in the states of Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
